Why AWARE?
White people benefit from the social and economic systems that perpetuate racism. Ending the terror and injustice of white supremacy can only be accomplished if white people work to be anti-racist. In AWARE, we explore experiences with race and racism with an open heart and without judging ourselves and others to understand the impacts on our lives and the lives of People of Color. This journey will go beyond inherent bias, to consider the historical, systemic, and individual context that influence our views toward the concept of race. Participants will leave with tools and actions to be active anti-racists.
AWARE is not about blame or guilt. It is about awareness and action. You will learn in an environment that will at times be uncomfortable. But you will also grow and transform in ways you never expected.

Why White Caucus/Affinity Groups?
Some may say it's racist or promotes segregation for a program like this to be only for white-identified people. AWARE is only part of the journey toward justice. Conversations that bring everyone to the table to fight against racism must occur. But until white people understand their role in racial oppression, they cannot be helpful allies. During the learning process, we can avoid subjecting People of Color to the painful truths that arise when uncovering and exploring racism from a white perspective. It is imperative that even the ugly, awkward, and disturbing aspects of our experiences and beliefs be acknowledged to truly dismantle the structures that maintain white supremacy.
